Common Problems in Summaries of Article 1

General Concerns
1. Don't forget to add APA style in-text citation (author's name + year) and reference list
2. Try to paraphrase as much as possible (for a better grade)
3. For quoting: "p." means page and "para." means paragraph.
4. A conclusion statement is missing in many summaries (e.g., these two cases demonstrate how hard it is to revive local production in the U.S.)

Key Highlights to Include

1. Part 1 (Para.1-6): Introduction
  • Thesis/Main Point (found in para. 1)
  • The most important supporting details - Two main problems (found in para.2)
  • Contrast between small or mid-sized companies (so called "SMB") vs. big companies - SMB experiences more struggle due to lack of resources and experience (found in para.5-6)
2. Part 2 (Para.8-16): A Closer look at Case #1
  • Three main problems for Case #1 (found in para.10-11)
  • Results/consequences (found in para. 12-14)
  • Other similar case (found in para.15-16)
3. Part 3 (Para.17-25): A Closer look at Case #2
  • Four main problems for Case #2 (found in para.19, 21, 23, 24)
  • Results/consequences (found in para. 25)
Word Choice/Grammar Issues
  1. Distinguish "argue" (belief) vs. "report" (observation of facts)
  2. Use a past tense verb when describing what happened to the companies, but use a present tense for all the reporting verbs (e.g., the author argues, states, shows, explains...)
  3. The author provided two cases...The first case is....Another case is...(X) -> The author provided two cases...The first case is....the other case is...(O)
  4. The company was faced with a problem (X) -> The company faced a problem (Or a problem faced by the company was...) (O)
  5. Consumers' demand (need) for purchasing domestic products (X) -> desire/willingness/preference (O)
